The Los Alamos area has been the home of an extensive native culture as evidenced by the large number archaeological sites throughout the Countyand the nearby present day Pueblos. This itinerary features easily accessible archaeological sites that are open for public viewing. A 1/2 day commitment is the minimum recommended for this itinerary. You can easily spend an entire weekend or more if you would like. |

Directions:

Start at the Los Alamos Visitor Center for maps and help with directions. From the Visitor Center, the Historical Museum is a short walk away -- the museum features interpretive materials on the ancient inhabitants of the area and there is a small archaeological site excavated immediately adjacent to the Los Alamos Historicl\al Museum. To continue from the museum or visitor center, drive one block South to Trinity Drive, turn right, and follow the signs to Hwy. 501 (West Jemez Road) and Bandelier National Monument; turn left when you reach Hwy. 4 and follow the signs to the Bandelier Visitor Center; when leaving Bandelier, turn right on Hwy. 4 and follow Hwy. 4 to the intersection of East Jemez Road (you will pass through White Rock where food, gas, and lodging are available); just past the intersection on the right is the parking area for Tsankawi |
